After a day exploring the rugged beauty of the Uco Valley, our journey through Mendoza continued north to Luján de Cuyo, the historic heart of Argentine wine. This is where tradition meets innovation—where century-old vines sit beside modern cellars, and every tasting feels like a story being told through glass and terroir.
The Legacy of Catena Zapata
Our day began at Catena Zapata, perhaps the most recognized name in Argentine wine. The winery’s striking Mayan-inspired architecture rose out of the vineyards like a temple dedicated to Malbec. Inside, we were guided through a tasting that showcased the legacy of generations—each wine a tribute to the high-altitude vineyards that made Mendoza famous. The balance, elegance, and expression of terroir reminded us why Catena Zapata is often credited with putting Argentina on the global wine map.
A Leisurely Lunch at Roberto Bonfanti
From there, we made our way to Roberto Bonfanti, a boutique family-owned winery that quickly became one of our favorite stops of the trip. We settled into a six-course lunch paired beautifully with Bonfanti’s estate wines—each dish thoughtfully prepared to highlight the character of the vineyard. The setting was serene and inviting, surrounded by olive trees and rows of vines. The peaceful, unhurried pace was the perfect way to relax away the afternoon, savoring both the flavors and the tranquility of this special place.
A Passionate Encounter at Matervini
After lunch, we visited Matervini, where we were greeted by Gonzalo, a host whose passion for winemaking was infectious. The tasting experience was intimate, personal, and full of insight into the micro-terroirs that define Luján de Cuyo. Matervini’s wines, from silky Malbecs to expressive blends, reflected the land’s diversity and the team’s relentless pursuit of quality. It was one of those rare tastings where the story behind the wine was just as memorable as the wine itself.
Dinner and a Showpiece at Casa Vigil
As the sun dipped behind the Andes, we arrived at Casa Vigil—known locally as El Enemigo—for what can only be described as an extraordinary evening. Set among vineyards and gardens, the restaurant offered a 10-course tasting menu paired with the estate’s celebrated wines. Each course was an art form, beautifully plated and expertly matched with selections that revealed the full character of the region. From start to finish, it was a sensory journey that left the entire group speechless.
The ambiance, the warmth of the staff, and the creativity of the cuisine made Casa Vigil one of the standout experiences of our time in Argentina. It was the perfect culmination of our days in Luján de Cuyo—a celebration of craftsmanship, connection, and culture.
The Heart of Mendoza
Luján de Cuyo revealed a different side of Mendoza: refined yet welcoming, rich in history yet forward-thinking. Here, winemaking is not just a profession—it’s a passion, a family tradition, and a way of life. As our journey continued south toward Patagonia, we carried with us the tastes, aromas, and memories of this extraordinary region.
