Part 1 – Buenos Aires: Tango, Tradition & the Taste of Argentina

Our Sips & Sights Travel adventure through Argentina began in the country’s spirited capital—Buenos Aires, a city where European elegance meets South American rhythm. For travelers seeking culture, cuisine, and an authentic glimpse into Argentina before heading west to Mendoza’s wine country, Buenos Aires offers the perfect beginning.

A City of Color, Culture, and Movement

We started our exploration aboard an open-air hop-on, hop-off bus, allowing us to discover the city’s neighborhoods at our own pace. From the vibrant streets of La Boca, alive with murals and tango dancers, to the San Telmo Market, brimming with antiques and aromas of fresh empanadas, every stop offered a snapshot of Argentine life.

The route carried us through El Centro to admire the iconic Obelisco, before ending the afternoon at Recoleta Cemetery, resting place of Eva Perón—a name that still resonates deeply in Argentine history and culture. The intricate mausoleums and leafy pathways made this stop both reflective and fascinating.

Evenings of Tango and Culinary Delight

As daylight faded, the energy of the city transformed. We spent an unforgettable evening at El Querendí, one of Buenos Aires’ most intimate and authentic tango shows. The combination of passionate dance, live music, and a glass of Malbec set the mood for our first night in Argentina.

No visit would be complete without indulging in the city’s culinary scene. Dinner at Don Julio—one of the world’s most celebrated parrillas—lived up to every expectation with its perfectly grilled steaks and attentive service. Another evening, we experienced D’Oro, a refined Italian restaurant where handmade pasta and local wines reminded us of Buenos Aires’ European heritage.

Strolling Through the City of Neighborhoods

Perhaps what makes Buenos Aires so special is its walkability. Over the course of the day, we covered nearly eight miles on foot, wandering through parks, plazas, and leafy boulevards. Each stroll was pleasantly “interrupted” by a café cortado, a glass of Malbec, or a quick stop for pastries. We even visited the legendary El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a former opera house turned bookstore—an architectural marvel and a photographer’s dream.

The Perfect Prelude to Mendoza

Our time in Buenos Aires was the perfect introduction to Argentina—a country defined by its people, flavors, and rhythm. From tango to steak, wine to architecture, every experience invited us deeper into the culture. With full hearts (and full glasses), we set our sights westward toward Mendoza, ready to trade city lights for vineyard views in Part 2 of our journey.
